French media anxiety: In terms of industrial robotization, France was at the bottom last year

The French online media "Devizu" reported that China has been making large-scale investments in the robotization of its industry for several years and is now ahead of the United States. This is in stark contrast to France, which falls further behind in the 2021 rankings.

In 2021, France lags even further in industrial automation and robotics. The number of robots per 10,000 employees in French factories fell 16% to 163, according to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR).

As the chart shows, France has dropped 4 places in the 2020 ranking, having dropped to 20th place. With a few exceptions, such as Spain or Belgium and Luxembourg, other industrial countries continue to invest and increase the robot density in their factories.

Baseline: In 2021, the global average is 141 industrial robots per 10,000 employees. In a year, it has increased by 12%.

South Korea is the champion of industrial robotization

In the ranking, South Korea consolidated its number one position in 2021 and reached a new record of 1,000 robots per 10,000 employees (+7.3% in one year).

Preliminary figures released by the IFR in September suggest that China will stand out in the rankings. The breakthrough is indeed quite big: China has climbed 4 places to fifth place (+31%) with 322 robots per 10,000 employees. Now ahead of its great rival, the United States, which drops to 9th place with a density of 274 robots.

Besides China, we note strong growth in industrial robotization in Slovenia (+36.1%, to 249 robots) and Switzerland (+32.6%, to 240 robots), ranking 10th and 11th respectively.

Additional info: In 2018, China ranked 20th with 140 robots per 10,000 employees, after France (16th with 154 industrial robots per 10,000 employees). China more than doubled during that time, while France stagnated.

What's next? This situation is indeed distressing for France, which is still far behind all competitors, whether it is Europe, Asia or the United States. At this time, politicians and industrialists are constantly calling for the reindustrialization of the country. However, it seems difficult to imagine any re-industrialization without the automation and robotization of factories. Will France's 2030 plan, launched a year ago, provide 800 million euros in funding for industrial robotization, change the status quo? See you next time in a year.
